IMPACT: ECONOMIC

Tackling India's unemployment crisis through technology.

How has Seeds of Peace had an impact on you?

Seeds of Peace helped me learn, at a very young age, what people across the world were going through. It’s the sort of thing you can’t really unlearn. And I’m really glad about that.

How have you impacted your community?

Unemployment and underemployment are a national crises, with around 95% of Indian youth deemed unemployable. They take whatever opportunity they can get, and an overwhelming majority struggle to put food on the table.

Studies have found that due to technological disruption from artificial intelligence, over 99% of this workforce could be rendered useless in the next decade, resulting in a billion people without the skills to get a job.

My GATHER Fellowship project provides skills and job opportunities to help Indian workers step into a more secure future.

X Billion Skills Lab, which I co-founded, is preparing India’s workforce by providing both training and recruitment. We want everybody—no matter their gender, caste, class or income—to have hope for the future and the opportunity to lead a secure life.

For under $100, we provide each candidate from a low-income background with a learning tablet. This computer gives job-seekers curated content, both live and recorded, to help them develop essential skills and find the right employer.

“Disproportionate capital has been invested to create demand for products nobody needs. Thus, we have created a world where the most important enterprises, the ones with the most access and resources, have nothing to do with creating a better life for its residents. Neither policy nor charity alone can change this—only human endeavor. I want to be part of this change.”
